Middle Bets

We trained our middle bet model on the MLB, and like the NFL, we have a full season of data to draw upon to help you make the best choices possible.

For the uninitiated, Middle Bets are rarer opportunities to bet both sides of a bet, with differing lines. As a real example in college basketball today, if you bet Alabama's Nimari Burnett to score under 11.5 points with Bet365, and over 10.5 points with Fanduel, both at +100, then if he scores 11 points, you win both bets. Meanwhile, if he hits any other score, you don't lose a cent!

As you can see, our middle bet screen is far more detailed than any other on the market. That's because we spent the last 9 months understanding exactly what we can do to make sure you make a profit as often as possible.

In the MLB, there are some great markets. You have two options:

Low risk, low hit rate middles

Top markets: Game Total Runs (ie: Total points), Total Pitching Outs, Total Strikeouts

These opportunities are more variable, but that means they tend to come with much lower risk. For example, betting points total middles in the MLB shouldn't mean taking a hit of more than 5% if you lose. Note you can also bet points total middles even if the gap is only 0.5 runs, meaning if the middle hits exactly, one bet is a push, and the other a win. This means less reward, but again, less risk!

Higher Risk, high reward middles

Top markets: Total hits, total runs, total singles, total bases

The key to these markets is that they are incredibly low variability, but require you to make more educated decisions using our player data. Your average player will have 0, 1, or 2 hits in a game almost every day of their career, for example. That means you have a significantly increased chance of the middle hitting, but also you'll lose slightly more of your stake if you lose (around 20-30%), and less profit if you win

Personally, I like these bets once the season gets going and you have more recent data to work from. These are middles that reward you knowing a player is likely to hit the magic number, so once a player has played a few weeks of the season, you'll be able to spot instantly in our data that they're likely winners.

Middles are so much fun. The only downside is needing to manage multiple sportsbooks, but that's a given these days, and even if you only use two, it's always a viable way of making MLB money.

Positive Expected Value (EV) Bets

Positive EV betting is your best friend.

The principle of this section of BetSmart is quite simple, but is the essential component of every professional bettor's profitability. Betting positive expected value, means playing only bets where the odds are more generous than the implied probability of the 'true odds'. - ie: without the sportsbook's vig, or cut.

If, for example, we look at this currently available bet for opening day, involving Geraldo Perdomo, we can see that the value of the bet is around 10% greater than the 'true' odds of him having over 0.5 hits.

By expanding the odds from the right of the row, you can see too, that Bet365 are way off in their odds of -152 compared to other books, who generally have it priced closer to -200.

What does this mean in practice? Well, it means you're getting odds that are massively in your favor, and instead of the sportsbooks screwing you, for once, you are the one taking them for a ride. You've turned the tables, and best of all? We did all the hard work for you. No math, or difficult calculators, just easy to read and understand data that is usually reserved for syndicates and pros.

Positive EV betting is a great way to win long term. As a rule, if you continually bet at lines that beat the probability of an event occurring, you will likely win in the short, medium and long term.

That said, one of the things we do differently to others, is to also include all of the matchup data we have. That means, in this case, you're not only betting on something you know is better value, but you also know he's hit the over in his last 4 games too. Again, as we expand our data over the next few months, expect to see even more cool matchup and relevant datapoints (at bats, pitcher data etc).
